Alcohol is increasingly seen as a depressant that can worsen anxiety and disrupt sleep, while there’s growing research (and cultural buzz) around psilocybin (the active compound in mushrooms) being used therapeutically for depression, PTSD, and anxiety. 2. The “Experience” Over the “Buzz.” There’s a sense that alcohol leads to a repetitive, often messy night with a guaranteed hangover. Psychedelics like mushrooms are framed more around a meaningful, introspective, or even spiritual experience—something that can offer personal insight or connection, not just intoxication. 3. Information & Harm Reduction. With the internet, Gen Z has unprecedented access to information about substances, their effects, and risks. Platforms like TikTok and Reddit are filled with personal testimonials and harm reduction guides for psychedelics. This contrasts with the perception of alcohol’s well-documented, long-term physical harms (liver disease, cancer risk). 4. Economic Factors. Going out for drinks is expensive! A night out can easily cost $50+, whereas a dose of mushrooms is often a one-time, relatively low-cost experience. 5. Cultural Rebellion & Authenticity. For older generations, drinking was a mainstream rite of passage. For Gen Z, not drinking or choosing an alternative substance can be a form of rebellion against that older norm.
